About us

Hljómey is a non-profit community project, run by people in the Westman Islands who wanted to create something beautiful for their town.

What is Hljómey?

Hljómey is a music festival where homes and businesses in the Westman Islands open their living rooms to musicians and guests. Each concert lasts half an hour. Guests choose their own route through town and show their wristbands at the door, and most artists play twice during the evening, each time in a different house.

The first Hljómey was held in 2023. The festival has grown steadily since, and around 530 guests came in 2026. Around the main night there is also Hljómey Xtra, a special event on the Saturday night when we find something great, and BarnaHljómey, free entertainment for children in partnership with Vestmannaeyjabær, at midday on Hljómey day itself.

A community project, not a business

No one takes a profit out of Hljómey. Ticket sales, merchandise and sponsorship go towards paying the artists and the cost of the festival, and anything left over goes back into the next Hljómey.

The festival runs on goodwill: hosts who open their homes, volunteers, sponsors and townspeople who welcome the guests. Without them there would be no Hljómey.

Operations

KGBS ehf. runs the operational side of Hljómey, such as ticket sales, the online shop, contracts and accounts. The company is run on a non-profit basis for the benefit of the festival.
