Frequently asked questions
Everything worth knowing about Hljómey: tickets, the night itself and the trip to the Westman Islands.
The festival
What is Hljómey?
Hljómey is a music festival where homes and businesses in the Westman Islands open their living rooms to musicians and guests. Each concert lasts half an hour. Guests choose their own route through town and show their wristbands at the door, and most artists play twice during the evening, each time in a different house.
When is Hljómey held?
Hljómey is always held the day after the First Day of Summer (sumardagurinn fyrsti). The next festival is on Friday 23 April 2027. BarnaHljómey is at midday the same day and Hljómey Xtra on the Saturday night.
What does the day look like?
The festival is always opened at Landsbankinn at 16:00. The concerts in the houses start at 19:30 and run until midnight. The festival always ends outside Brothers Brewery with a sing-along and a bonfire.
Is there an age limit?
Yes, the age limit for Hljómey is 18. BarnaHljómey, on the other hand, is for children and families and free of charge.
Where does it take place?
In homes and businesses in central Vestmannaeyjar. The houses are announced closer to the festival and appear in the programme and in the Hljómey app with addresses and a map.
Who is playing?
The artists are announced one at a time on the website, on social media and on the mailing list. Around 15 artists play in around 15 houses each year. The Artists page lists everyone who has played since the start.
What is Hljómey Xtra?
Hljómey Xtra is a special event on the Saturday night of the Hljómey weekend, at Alþýðuhúsið. It only happens when we find something unique that the Westman Islands rarely get to experience. We can confirm that Hljómey Xtra will be held in 2027. Xtra tickets are sold separately.
What is BarnaHljómey?
BarnaHljómey is free entertainment for children and families at midday on Hljómey day itself, in partnership with Vestmannaeyjabær and part of the South Iceland Children’s Culture Days.
Tickets
How do I get tickets?
Tickets are sold through pre-registration and a draw at hljomey.is/midasala. For Hljómey 2027, pre-registration opens on 5 February 2027 at 12:00 and stays open for a week. It makes no difference when during that week you register. When pre-registration closes, a random draw is made and the winners receive a payment link by email.
Do previous guests get priority?
Guests from previous years get one extra entry in the draw, i.e. double weight, if they register with the same email or phone number they bought tickets with before.
How long do I have to pay?
Winners must pay within the deadline stated in the email. If payment is not made in time, the tickets go to the next people on the waiting list.
How do I get my wristband?
Each ticket has its own QR code, valid for one wristband. Show the code at the wristband pick-up at Hljómey, from the email, the Hljómey app or your phone wallet (Apple Wallet or Google Wallet).
Can I give my ticket to someone else?
Yes, you may give your tickets to others and can forward individual tickets from your ticket page. Reselling above the price paid is not allowed.
Can I get into every house?
The wristband gives access to the festival concerts as long as there is room in each house. Since most artists play twice, you can usually catch the ones you want to see.
Getting to the islands
How do I get to the Westman Islands?
The Herjólfur ferry sails between the mainland and the islands. There are no flights to the islands at this time of year, so book the ferry early, as many people travel to the islands for the Hljómey weekend.
Where can I stay?
Visit Vestmannaeyjar lists accommodation on the islands. It pays to book early.
Is there an app?
Yes, the Hljómey app is free. It shows the artists, lets you plan your own night in My Hljómey, find the houses on a map and keep your ticket.
Other
Who is behind Hljómey?
Hljómey is a non-profit community project run by people in the Westman Islands. KGBS ehf. handles the operations, and anything left over goes back into the next Hljómey.
What are the Hljómey music games?
leikir.hljomey.is has free music games all year round: pub quiz, music bingo, bingo, guitar party, karaoke and “Hvaða ár?” (Which year?). The big screen plays and your phone is the buzzer.
